Bacchus

Bacchus is a painting by Caravaggio housed in the Uffizi Museum in Florence. It was painted at the end of the 16th century, but experts are divided over its precise date"; nor is it possible to identify a definite commissioner, although it is known that the painting soon found its way into the collection of the Medici family, where it is listed from 1618 onwards. A common hypothesis is that the first commissioner was Cardinal del Monte, Caravaggio's protector and patron, who then offered the painting to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand I de' Medici. From then on, the painting remained in the Medici collection until it was transferred to the Uffizi Museum. Long forgotten and almost abandoned in the museum's storerooms, it was rediscovered in the early 20th century and identified as being by Caravaggio, largely thanks to the expertise of two Italian art historians: Matteo Marangoni and Roberto Longhi. This painting has now become one of the most famous by the Lombard painter; it belongs to a series of works that deal with fairly similar subjects and use the same type of model." The painting appears to depict the Roman god Bacchus in a semi-recumbent position, a glass of wine in his hand held out towards the viewer as an offering, a tray of fruit in front of him and his head crowned with vine leaves.
