Ma destinée

The Red Vine at Montmajour, also known as The Red Vine, is an oil painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, executed in Arles in November 1888. It is the only painting he sold publicly during his lifetime. Despite this, it seems that Vincent sold at least one other painting himself: in the letter to his brother Theo referenced 506 F [ref. needed], he announced that he had sold 20 francs for a portrait of a friend of Father Tanguy, probably in early 1888. The painting depicts the grape harvest in the Arles countryside, probably at Le Trébon, to the north of the city, on the way to Montmajour Abbey. The work is remarkable for its colours, particularly the contrast between the complementary yellows and purples, and in this sense heralds Fauvism. In his letter of 2 October 1888, Vincent told Eugène Boch about his project: "Well, I have to go and work in the vineyard near Mont Major. It is all purple-yellow-green under the blue sky, a beautiful motif of colour". In September-October 1888, Vincent van Gogh was working on colour effects"; this preoccupation can be seen in his reflections on works from this period, such as Le Café de nuit, La Nuit étoilée sur le Rhône and La Terrasse du café le soir". At the end of the 19th century, the wine industry was hit by the ravages of phylloxera. The red and yellow hues of the leaves during the harvest were unusual, as they were still green when the grapes were ripening.
