The Lamentation of Christ

The Deposition from the Cross (Italian: Compianto su Cristo morto) of 1305, is a fresco by the Italian painter and architect Giotto di Bondone for the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Part of the Cycle of the Life of Christ, the work appears on one of the walls of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, in the lower register, on the fourth section of the north wall (on the left as you look towards the altar), panel no. 36 below panel no. 24 (The Wedding at Cana). The theme of Christian iconography is that of the Descent from the Cross, also known as the Deposition of Christ or, depending on the protagonists in the scene, the Deploration or Lamentation before the dead Christ. Jesus is taken down from the cross. He is in the foreground surrounded by the Three Marys and Saint John (one of Christ's apostles) is behind him. There is also Saint Peter, recognisable by his bald spot, and Saint Paul at his side. On the left, in the background, is a chorus of weeping women. The Mount of Olives is obliquely depicted. As in other paintings on the same theme, the presence of certain figures is an anachronism, such as Saint Paul, converted long after the crucifixion, or Saint John the Baptist, already dead. The emphasis is on the emotion of the figures, reinforcing their expressiveness without exaggerating it.
